Folic Acid, a member of the vitamin B family, is required for healthy red blood cell formation, cardiovascular health, and protein synthesis. It has also been well established as a crucial nutrient for healthy fetal development prior to and during the first trimester of pregnancy.
During early pregnancy, folic acid helps form the neural tube, which forms the early brain and spine. It is advised to supplement with folic acid during early pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects.
It also works with vitamin B-6 and B-12 to control high levels of homocysteine in the blood. Elevated homocysteine levels may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
